The Commission Process

How does it work?

Everything starts with a simple conversation. Talk to me, ideally here at my studio and gallery but if thats not possible in the first instance then let me know your thoughts through the plethora of online options available. If I can help you, I will. If not, then chances are, I can point you to someone who can.

  • Expert execution of private, public and corporate commission artwork.

  • Specialist in Bronze, Glass, Composite, Mild Steel & Stainless Steel Fabrication.

  • Global clientele, worldwide shipping and installation.

  • Integrated workflow with Designers, Architects, Local Authorities & Ground Contractors.

What happens next?

Each commission follows its own path but in general the basics remain consistent as follows:

  • Initial meeting / site appraisal/ concept/ ideas & drawings outline.

  • Agreement/ approval of sculpture/ site specific requirements consideration.

  • Contract/ specification/ install details/ allocation of build slot/ timeframe agreement.

  • 50% deposit on build start date.

  • Agreed periodic updates and visits if required.

  • Sculpture completes/ packed ready for shipping/ sign off & settlement of balance.

  • Shipping/ install as per contract (usually guidance for ground contractors internationally).

What does it cost?

Material choices and scale of work give an endless list of options that give enormous latitude to budgets. A minor work may very well cost as little as £10K whereas a substantive foundry bronze may be £150K+.

Sometimes however, something unique is the only choice.

It is impossible to give an accurate price for this kind of work in a sentence but I will try to give an indication of perimeter on such an undertaking.

Let's be honest, commissioning a bespoke artwork is not for everyone, in fact it's for very few. It requires a commitment beyond simply acquiring a piece of my edition work from a gallery collection or indeed from my gallery here, something you are very welcome to do and in 99% of cases is the appropriate choice.

Perhaps a practical example is helpful such as the creation of a tailored "Zipper" or Zip".

Pictured is a composite "cold" casting of a zip. The surface of this piece is impregnated with ground bronze giving a near identical finish to its more expensive molten foundry cast bronze counterpart. This reflects one of the more economic material choices that can be made at the outset with no visual difference to the finished artwork.

Although not an exact science, this composite Zip is estimated to cost around £1k per foot to execute (minimum 12 ft length).

Further up the scale, A marine grade 316 Stainless Steel Zip (as pictured in construction above) runs @ approximately £2k per foot of construction. A foundry bronze would move further up the price scale.
